Why XML is useful

 

Markup languages use structured data. You define a framework or schema to structure 
the data and then add the data. If you can represent data in a structured format, you can 
create markup language files. A structured file can be used to create HTML files for 
different browsers, a consistent starting point without recreating the wheel for each site. 
Structured FrameMaker documents let you turn your data into HTML, XML, or SGML 
efficiently, without having to be a programmer. 

FrameMaker’s structured authoring identifies (wraps) text as elements, represented by 
tags, which are in turn contained (wrapped) within other elements. This establishes a 
document hierarchy. Beyond formatting of paragraphs, structured elements provide 
information such as specific word meaning and importance.

The XML exercises in this Classroom in a Book give you a chance to use the basic menu 
to export a Structured FrameMaker 7.0 file to XML for use in these new, information-
heavy arenas. What’s more, you can bring them back into Structured FrameMaker 7.0, 
revise them, and return them once again to their source.

Almost all documents have an implicit structure, logical units that appear in a consistent 
order with a specific hierarchy (in school we were taught we had to have an introduction-
body-conclusion). FrameMaker  allows you to work with a document’s structure by 
organizing the contents–sections, headings, tables, and so on into logical units called 
elements. Elements can be further described by their attributes.

Markup languages with the text marked with tags, like sales tags on items in a store, 
provide information about the objects they’re attached to. Nesting tags give a hierarchal 
structure. The FrameMaker 7.0 Structure View window displays the typical tree 
branching structure, showing the hierarchy of elements of information flow.

In addition to using the Save As command to export FrameMaker 7.0 documents to 
advanced structured formats, FrameMaker 7.0 includes Quadralay WebWorks Publisher 
Standard Edition, which provides robust features for creating HTML, Dynamic HTML, 
and XML output. You can use WebWorks Publisher Standard Edition to do the following:
