Using Drawings, Maps, and Layers
290
Acrobat 9 Pro includes several tools for measuring the distance and area
of objects in a PDF drawing. You most often use these tools with draw-
ings, PDF maps, or documents being sent to a printer.
Open the Analysis toolbar by choosing Tools > Analysis > Show Analy-
sis Toolbar. You can also right-click (Control-click) the toolbar well at the
top of the program window and select Analysis.
To measure on a document, click the Measuring tool
on the Analy-
sis toolbar; the Measurement toolbar opens. Choose one of four ways for
the Measuring tool to align with page content or snap—read about the
Snap Types in the sidebar “Make It Snappy.”
Before you start measuring, check the scale the tool uses. The Scale
Ratio for the measurement tools is 1:1 and set in inches—that is, moving
your pointer 1 inch on the page equals 1 inch in actual size. You usually
have a 1:1 ratio for pages destined for print, but that’s not the case for
drawings or blueprints.
Note
The default is to use the scale and units from the document, if they are
present. The scale and unit values are embedded in the file’s metadata
when you create the PDF file in programs like Visio and AutoCAD. In
georegistered maps, the scale and unit values are taken from the map’s
metadata (see #109, “Commenting and Measuring on a PDF Map”).
To reset the ratio, follow these steps:
1. Select a tool from the Measurement toolbar and right-click
(Control-click) the page with the tool to open the shortcut menu.
Choose Change Scale Ratio to open the dialog.
2. Type a value in both of the Scale Ratio fields, and select the unit
of measure from the pop-up menus. A common ratio on floor plans
is 1/8 inch to 1 inch, shown in
Figure 108a
. Notice that 1/8 inch is
entered as a decimal value, as the dialog doesn’t accept fractions.
3. Click OK to close the dialog.

Set the ratio according to your project’s scale.
Make It Snappy
The Measurement tool uses
different methods of align-
ing itself to content on the
page, which helps with accu-
rate measurement. Choose
from four Snap Types,
located on the Measurement
toolbar. With an active meas-
urement tool, when you click
the document, the pointer
automatically moves to the
nearest location specified by
the active Snap Type.
Here are your choices:
•
Snap to Paths
moves
your pointer location to the
closest drawn path or line.
•
Snap to Endpoints
moves the pointer loca-
tion to the end of the
closest drawn line.
•
Snap to Midpoints
moves the pointer loca-
tion to the center of the
closest drawn line.
•
Snap to Intersections
moves the pointer loca-
tion to the nearest inter-
section of two drawn
lines.
If you don’t want to use any
snap options, right-click
(Control-click) with the
measurement tool to open
the shortcut menu, and
choose Don’t Snap to Page
Content.
