4.4 Connecting to SBC329
To interact with on-board firmware requires the SBC329 to have connected, as a
minimum, a video display (DVI or HDMI) and a USB keyboard. Ethernet and
terminal (COM1) connections may also be required, depending on Operating System
requirements. These ports are accessed through the backplane pins, using a Rear
Transition Module (RTM).
COM1 is configured as DTE with default settings of 115200 baud, 8 bits/character,
1 stop bit, parity disabled and no flow control.
4.4.1
Rear Transition Module
For development systems, connection to the board I/O can be achieved using an
RTM. This converts the condensed pinout of the backplane connectors to pinouts
suitable for use by industry standard connectors.
CAUTION
The I/O types available at the RTM connectors depend on the variant of the SBC329 and RTM.
Ensure that each interface is available before connecting anything to the RTM.
The following items are required:
The appropriate RTM (VPX3UX301 or VPX3UX601)
An SIOX600 breakout panel and a null-modem 9-way D to 9-way D-type cable
for connecting COM1 to a control terminal or PC running terminal emulation
software
For each Ethernet port, a CAT5 (or better) straight-through patch cable for
10/100/1000BASE-T
CAUTION
Ensure that the board variant supports BASE-T connections. On variants that do not, BASE-BX
signals are connected to the RJ-45 connectors on the RTM. Permanent damage could be done
to the SBC329 if these variants are connected to a live network.
For video, a DVI or HDMI monitor with cable (Mini-HDMI to HDMI plus
optional DVI convertor)
For USB, the required peripheral with a standard type A connector
For optional interfaces (additional DVI and SATA) an MEZSBC3U1 breakout
module should be fitted to the RTM
The VPX I/O Modules manual contains more details on fitting RTMs. Similar
antistatic and safety precautions apply when handling and/or installing RTMs as for
the SBC329.
