AppleTalk Address Resolution Protocol (AARP) Cache

463

AARP also registers a node’s dynamically assigned address on the
network, as follows:

■

AARP randomly assigns an address.

■

To determine whether another node is already using the address, the
system broadcasts AARP probe packets containing the address.

■

If the system receives no reply, the address becomes the node’s
address.

■

If the system receives a reply, it repeats the process until it discovers
an available address.

AARP entries include the following information:

■

AARP Address

— AARP address of the node in

network.node

format

■

MAC Address

— MAC layer address of the node

■

Interface

— Interface through which the node can be reached

■

Age

— Number of seconds before the system ages out the

cache entry

If there is no space available in the AARP cache for a new entry, the
least-recently-used entry is purged to make room for the new entry.
