Always try to work as directly underneath the fall
arrest block as you can.
In the event of an arrest this
will minimise the effects of a fall.
In the event of a fall, the arrest block will arrest the
fall without jarring. If the person is connected to
a G Stop the person will be suspended at the arrest
point. Make sure you make allowances for this in
your rescue plan.
In the event of an arrest with a G Saver, the victim
can be retrieved. To do this the arrest block must
be suspended in a position to allow a colleague to
operate the arrest block.
To operate the Saver’s retrieval facility, lift and
rotate the engagement trigger to its lock out
position. The crank arm is now rotated and pushed
in so as to engage the gear mechanism. Rotate the
engagement trigger until it snaps into its lock in
position. Check that the gear mechanism is fully
engaged by trying to pull the crank arm out away
from the unit.
You can now operate the Saver as a
manual winch to either raise or lower the victim.
The brake will hold the person if you have to let go
of the handle.
This should not be used for work
positioning or be left unattended.
This winch facility should only be used in an
emergency situation and is for the rescue of
personnel only.
Practice engaging the gears before you start work.
Once the person has been recovered and
unattached from the Saver,
the mechanism can be
reverted back to a fall arrest block.
Make sure you have
tension on the rope before disengaging the gear
mechanism.
If you are using a G Guard always keep the load as
central as possible under the suspension point of
the Guard.
The rope will feed in and out automatically.
Always
keep tension on the rope and never allow the rope
to travel around corners.
If the block arrests the load you must make sure
that you have a recovery plan.
Always make sure that the weight of the load does
not exceed the Safe Working Load of the fall arrest
block.
Never push the equipment beyond its design
limits
.
If it will not do what you want it to do with
reasonable ease, then assume you have the wrong
equipment,
and contact your local HSS Safe & Sure.
Keep the equipment clean
. It will be less of a chore if
you clean the equipment regularly rather than leave it
until the end of the hire.
Always check the equipment before every shift,
use or break.
When the equipment is not in use always store it
somewhere clean, dry and safe from unauthorised
users
and thieves.
Disconnect the harness from the G Stop or G Saver,
or the load from the G Guard. Keep tension on the
rope and allow the rope to be recoiled by the
machine slowly. Never release the rope. This may
cause damage to the block and yourself.
Remove the arrest block from the anchor point
carefully.
Give the unit a final clean
in preparation for return to
your local HSS Safe & Sure
