HQ - Safetybar

Securing your kite with the bar

If you don't want to fly during a break or to setup your equipment secure
your kite with a groundstake as shown in the picture. To be on the safe
side put sand or other soft weights on the trailing edge of your kite. It works
best if the wind flow is straight towards the kite. Pack away your kite for longer breaks.

Set Up of the Safety bar

Attach the line flying lines shown in the drawing with larks-head knots. Attach the wrist strap
[1] of the 'Quick-release Safety system' around your wrist. Check for correct assembly of the
'safety leash quick release' [2]. Make sure that no flying or leader lines are tangled, and the
kite is  Anchored to the ground.

Winding the lines on the bar

IMPORTANT: To avoid twists in the line make sure that your unwinding action is the exact
reverse of your winding action.

Keep the Wrist strap on your wrist and hold the bar at the center. Then wind the leader lines
in a figure of eight around the bar. Wind the flying lines by using the line guides on the bar
end mouldings. Wind as you walk towards the kite. Just before you reach the kite attachment
points, wind the lines a few turns around one end of the bar.

Launching your kite with the Safety-bar

The safest way to launch your kite in high winds is across the wind. Launch the kite by pulling
on the bar. You may have to walk back a little to aid launching. Normally your kite will start
to fly in direction of the  wind window center, if you don't  steer in the opposite direction a
little bit. In strong winds it's advisable to steer the kite to the edge of the wind window by
pulling on the bar end that is closer to the edge.

Slack in the brake lines is necessary to ensure that they do not apply unwanted control inputs.

Using the safty system

HQ recommend to test the safety system to ensure you can activate it in an emergency.
When the kite is powered up, simply let go of the control bar.

If you let go of the control bar the kite will came down to the ground. You  are responsible
for securing the kite.  The best way is to call a helper to fix your kite on the ground, or to use
a groundstake and secure it like shown on the previous page.

If you are still in trouble with your kite and there is still a dangerous situation, you can release
the whole equipment by pulling on the safety leash quick release [1] in direction of the kite.

To reassemble the safety leash quick release you have to hook the loop that comes from the
wrist strap over the small pin. Then push the fastener over the folded pin.

Slow turning with the bar

Slow basic turns are initiated by gentle pulling the bar right hand side of the bar towards you
for a right turn and left hand side towards you for a left turn. For practice it is best to try it
at the top of the windwindow, where the kite pulls less than in the powerzone.

Tight Turning with the Bar

For faster and tighter turns you have to push the top end of the bar away from you whilst
pulling the bottom end torwards you. Each turn can be stopped by returning the bar to the
neutral position.

Landing your kite with the bar

In light winds you only have to pull on the brake lines with one hand until the kite reaches
the ground.

To land the kite in strong winds, steer it towards the edge of the windwindow close to the
ground and release the bar using the safety system. After landing, walk back to keep tension
on the lines, preventing the kite from being blown about. Secure the kite using the process
described before.

Reversing your kite with the bar

If the kite lands on its leading edge, you can relaunch it by pulling on the brakelines with one
hand whilst holding the bar with the other hand. The kite will rise backwards in the air.

As this happens, pull the bar left or right towards you to rotate the kite. If you keep on pulling
the brakelines the kite will land on it's trailing edge. If you release the brakelines the kite will
relaunch.
