Connecting the Cables

This chapter describes how to connect the interface cables, power the system, and check the status LEDs
on circuit cards to make sure you have installed everything properly.

Cisco MGX 8260 configurations will require some type of cable management plan for the WAN cabling.
This may include the installation of vertical and horizontal cable raceways that bolt to the racks.

The MGX 8260 uses the following cable types:

BITS—STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) cables for the timing source, terminated with RJ-45 connectors

DS3—Coaxial cables for DS3 lines terminated with SMB connectors (see

Table 5-1

)

T1—STP cables for 100-ohm T1 lines terminated with 50-pin RJ-21 connectors

E1—STP cables for 120-ohm E1 lines terminated with RJ-48 connectors

Fast Ethernet—Category 5 STP cables for 100BASE-TX lines terminated with RJ-45 connectors

OC-3—Single or mulitmode fiber cables for OC-3 lines terminated in small form factor LC or
MT-RJ connectors

10BASE-T—Category 5 STP cables for Ethernet management ports terminated with RJ-45
connectors

Alarm—Custom cable for visual or audible alarm indications terminated on a DB-15 connector

Console—EIA/TIA-232 serial cable for a console terminated with a DB-9 connector

Aux—EIA/TIA-232 serial cable for a modem terminated with a DB-9 connector

DC Power—12 AWG ST, UL 1015 wires for power and return. 8 AWG for safety ground

Caution

Use shielded cables with shielded connector hoods for all connections except DC power and ground.
