Overview

As network traffic continues to increase,
servers are hard-pressed to keep up with
the demand. The Adaptec Duo adapter
provides an efficient, cost-effective way to
scale bandwidth for PCI servers operating
on Fast Ethernet networks.

The ANA-6922A Duo adapter provides
two channels on a single board and Full
Duplex Fast Ethernet (FDFE) to deliver up
to 400 Mbps of cumulative throughput.
Each channel is capable of operating inde-
pendently at speeds ranging from 10 Mbps
to 200 Mbps. This enables the Adaptec
Duo adapter to accommodate a broad
spectrum of applications from graphics to
multimedia.

Further, because this 2-port adapter fills
only one PCI slot, the other slots remain
available for SCSI devices, RAID cards, or
additional network adapters—offering flexi-
bility and allowing servers to efficiently
meet changing requirements.

Key Features and Benefits

Scalability

The Adaptec Duo adapter addresses the
need to scale network bandwidth without
replacing or adding additional servers.
Connected to a single PCI slot on a server,
this adapter provides the equivalent of two
Fast Ethernet segments over one board—
at less than the cost of two separate single-
port adapters.

Full duplex mode

Full Duplex Fast Ethernet and Full Duplex
Ethernet (FDE) capabilities double the
cumulative system throughput, resulting in
up to 400 Mbps of total throughput (200
Mbps in each direction). Servers using the
Adpatec Duo adapter can handle, receive,
and transmit requests simultaneously over
both ports, so workstations benefit from
greater network performance.

Designed for performance

The ANA-6922A Duo adapter has been
certified for use in high-performance
Pentium Pro systems, using Digital’s latest
bridge technology to deliver superior PCI
2.1 functionality. The adapter’s efficient
bus design further enhances throughput by
minimizing CPU involvement in data han-
dling activities. Independent transmit and
receive FIFO (First In, First Out) buffers
for each of the two ports ensure consistently
superior performance, even during peak
network usage.

Flexible configuration

The Adaptec Duo adapter supports both
attached network segments at full link
bandwidth. Each channel is automatically
configured by the system. NWay auto-
negotiation allows the adapter to detect the
network’s maximum line speed and adjust
channels accordingly. For maximum flexi-
bility, this feature is compatible with all
10 Mbps and 100 Mbps devices, including
those without NWay line speed negotiation.

Duralink™ software enabled

Adaptec’s 10/100 PCI adapters are enabled
to work with Adaptec’s innovative Duralink
suite of software. This suite includes
Duralink Failover and Duralink Port
Aggregation. Duralink Failover establishes
an FDDI-like port resiliency with both
active and hot-standby links. In the event
that the active link fails, the standby link
is automatically activated to preserve the
network link and maintain the server’s
availability. Duralink Manager, included
with the adapter, is a data compilation tool
that simplifies adapter monitoring and
configuration. Duralink Port Aggregation
software lets users aggregate up to 12 ports
per workgroup for speeds up to 1.2 Gigabits
per second.
