EPON ONU SFP Transceiver Module

Version 1.00
Edition 1, 8/2009

Overview

The ONU5100-B22 is an EPON transceiver module that
complies with the Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP)
Transceiver MultiSource Agreement (MSA). Installing
the ONU5100-B22 in the SFP port on a switch lets the
SFP port act as an optical network unit (ONU) that
allows you to enjoy high-speed Internet access over
optical networks.

The ONU5100-B22 comes with one fiber port. No
configuration is required as all device configuration is
done remotely by the OLT (Optical Line Terminal).
Once you have connected the hardware, you are ready
to access the Internet.

Hardware Installation

You can install or remove the ONU5100-B22 while the
switch on which you want to install the ONU5100-B22
is operating.

To avoid possible eye injury, do not look into an
operating fiber-optic module's connectors.

Transceiver Installation

Use the following steps to install the ONU5100-B22 in
an SFP port.

1.

Insert the ONU5100-B22 into an SFP port with the

exposed section of PCB board facing down.

2.

Press the ONU5100-B22 firmly until it clicks into
place.

3.

The switch with the SFP port automatically detects
the installed ONU5100-B22. Check the LEDs to
verify that it is functioning properly.

4.

Use an SC-type, single-mode optical cable to
connect the ONU5100-B22’s PON port and an OLT
for Internet access.

Transceiver Removal

Use the following steps to remove the ONU5100-B22
from an SFP port.

1.

Remove the fiber optic cable from the ONU5100-

B22.

2.

Open the ONU5100-B22's latch (latch styles vary).

3.

Pull the ONU5100-B22 out of the port.

Test Your Connection

After you have installed and connected the ONU5100-
B22 to an OLT, open a web browser on your computer
which is connected to the switch on which the
ONU5100-B22 is installed and go to any web site (for
example,

www.zyxel.com

) to test your Internet

connection.
