40.1 DHCP Overview

DHCP ( Dynam ic Host Configurat ion Pr ot ocol RFC 2131 and RFC 2132) allow s individual com put er s
t o obt ain TCP/ I P configurat ion at st ar t - up fr om a ser ver. I f you configur e t he Sw it ch as a DHCP r elay
agent , t hen t he Sw it ch for war ds DHCP r equest s t o DHCP ser ver on your net w or k. I f you don’t
configure t he Sw it ch as a DHCP r elay agent t hen you m ust have a DHCP ser ver in t he br oadcast
dom ain of t he client com put er s or else t he client com put er s m ust be configur ed m anually.

DHCP Modes
I f t her e is alr eady a DHCP ser ver on your net w ork, t hen you can configur e t he Swit ch as a DHCP
r elay agent . When t he Sw it ch r eceives a r equest fr om a com put er on your net w or k, it cont act s t he
DHCP ser ver for t he necessar y I P infor m at ion, and t hen r elays t he assigned infor m at ion back t o t he
com put er.
DHCPv4 Configuration Options
The DHCPv4 configurat ion on t he Swit ch is divided int o Globa l and V LAN screens. The screen you
should use for configurat ion depends on t he DHCP ser vices you want t o offer t he DHCP client s on
your net wor k. Choose t he configurat ion scr een based on t he follow ing cr it er ia:
• Globa l - The Sw it ch for war ds all DHCP r equest s t o t he sam e DHCP ser ver.
• V LAN - The Swit ch is configured on a VLAN by VLAN basis. The Sw it ch can be configur ed t o relay
DHCP r equest s t o differ ent DHCP ser ver s for client s in differ ent VLAN.
