As you take up the weight of the exit plate,
half, remove the guide studs. Lower the exit
plate half down into the casing. Procure a “U”
shaped clip with cross drilled holes in the open
ends and slip it over the top bolt hole in the exit
plate. Slip a pin through the clip to make a clevis.
(See Fig. 33). Hook a line to the clevis and
carefully lift the exit plate half out of the cas-
ing. Don’t hit the rotor shaft.
sists of a vane entrance plate and a vane exit plate.
The high stage vane entrance plate is split in half
across its diameter to facilitate removal and instal-
lation of the inlet labyrinth seal (156). The vane
exit plate contains the shaft labyrinth seal (75).
Beginning with the last stage diffuser disassemble
as follows:
A. Remove the top half of the vane entrance plate
(152)
and the retaining disk (74) from the lower
half. Use a pry bar or studs screwed into the
tapped holes in the rim of the lower half of the
diffuser to rotate it up on the impeller until you
can screw an eye bolt into it and lift it off. Be
careful, the diffuser has some sharp points on
it and if it sinks back into the casing it will
come up the other side and may cause injury
or damage other parts. If the compressor has
more than two stages, you must rotate the next
lower stage diffuser until the exit plate splitline
is horizontal. Remove the screws in the top half
and use an eye bolt to remove and set the top
half down. Remove the labyrinth seals. Make
up some studs about twice as long as the screws
removed, with a short 90° bend on one end.
Remove two screws from the lower half and
screw in the studs. Remove the rest of the
screws and slide the lower half out on the studs.
Screw some eye bolts into the holes in the up-
per surface of the exit plate and rig a short sling.
