Cylinder Block
Inspection of Crankshaft
1. Put the crankshaft end journals
(Figure 6-74, (4))
on V-blocks.
2. Place a dial indicator
(Figure 6-74, (3))
on a
center main bearing surface.

3. Rotate the crankshaft and observe runout.
Record the measurements.

4. Use the color check method or MAGNAFLUX to
inspect the crankshaft for cracks. Replace the
crankshaft if evidence of fractures is found.
5. Measure the outside diameter of each crankpin
(Figure 6-75, (2))
and main bearing journal
(Figure 6-75, (1))
for specifications.
Take measurements at
several places around each bearing surface. If
not within specification, grind the journals and
install undersize bearings, or replace the
crankshaft. Record the measurements.

Reconditioning the Crankshaft
If any of the crankshaft journals do not meet the
specifications, it may be possible to grind any or all
of them to an undersize. The connecting rod
bearings, main bearings, and thrust bearing inserts
are available as 0.010 in. (0.25 mm) undersize. If
the journals are ground undersize, the following
finishing standards
