TIP
• Check that the “I” mark “a” on the intake cam-
shaft gear (rear cylinders) is aligned with the
edge of the cylinder head “b”.
• Check that the “I” mark “c” on the intake cam-
shaft gear (front cylinders) is above the edge of
the cylinder head “d”.
Out of alignment

Adjust.

5. Align:
• “T2” mark on the generator rotor
(with the stationary pointer on the generator
cover)

a. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise.
b. When piston #2 is at TDC on the compres-
sion stroke, align the “T2” mark “a” on the
generator rotor with the stationary pointer “b”
on the generator cover.

6. Check:
• “I” mark on the intake camshaft gear (front
cylinders)
(with the edge of the cylinder head)
• “I” mark on the intake camshaft gear (rear cyl-
inders)
(above the edge of the cylinder head)
TIP
• Check that the “I” mark “a” on the intake cam-
shaft gear (front cylinders) is aligned with the
edge of the cylinder head “b”.
• Check that the “I” mark “c” on the intake cam-
shaft gear (rear cylinders) is above the edge of
the cylinder head “d”.
Out of alignment

7. Measure:
• Valve clearance

Refer to “ADJUSTING THE VALVE CLEAR-
ANCE” on page 3-4.
8. Install:
• Cylinder head cover gasket
• Cylinder head cover
TIP
• Apply Yamaha bond No.1215 “1” onto the mat-
ing surfaces of the cylinder head cover, cylin-
der head cover gasket, and cylinder head.
• Tighten the cylinder head cover bolts in stages
and in a crisscross pattern.
