Checking power tilt system
EWM01971
Never get under the lower unit while it is
tilted, even when the tilt support knob is
locked. Severe injury could occur if the
outboard motor accidentally falls.
Body parts can be crushed between the
motor and the clamp bracket when the
motor is trimmed or tilted.
Be sure no one is near the outboard mo-
tor before performing this check.
(1) Check the power tilt unit for any sign of
oil leaks.
(2) Operate each of the power tilt switches
to check that all switches work.
(3) Tilt the outboard motor up and check
that the tilt rod is pushed out completely.
(4) Check that the tilt rod is free of corrosion
or other flaws.
(5) Tilt the outboard motor down. Check
that the tilt rod operates smoothly.

Battery
Check the battery’s charge. If your boat is
equipped with a Yamaha digital speedome-
ter, the voltmeter and low battery alert func-
tions will help you monitor the battery’s
charge. A battery in good condition will pro-
vide a minimum of 12 volts. Check that the
battery connections are clean, secure and
covered by insulating covers. The electrical
connections of the battery and cables must
be clean and properly connected or the bat-
tery will not start the engine.
If the battery needs charging, consult your
Yamaha dealer or the battery manufacturer’s
instructions.

Filling fuel
EWM01831
Gasoline and its vapors are highly flam-
mable and explosive. Always refuel ac-
cording to this procedure to reduce the
risk of fire and explosion.
Gasoline is poisonous and can cause in-
jury or death. Handle gasoline with care.
Never siphon gasoline by mouth. If you
should swallow some gasoline or inhale
a lot of gasoline vapor, or get some gas-
oline in your eyes, see your doctor im-
mediately. If gasoline spills on your skin,
wash with soap and water. If gasoline
spills on your clothing, change your
clothes.
(1) Be sure the engine is stopped.
(2) Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel tank
and tighten the air vent screw on the fuel
tank cap.
