6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Safety Rules
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Tie
back long hair, remove jewelry, and avoid loose fitting
clothing. Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause
permanent hearing loss! Wear hearing protection on a
full-time basis when using this machine.
• Never place any part of your body where it would be
in danger if movement should occur during assembly,
installation, operation, maintenance, repairing,
unplugging, or moving.
• Set Safe Condition before servicing, repairing or
• Do not run machine inside a closed building to prevent
asphyxiation from engine exhaust.
• Clear the work area of objects which might be picked up
and snagged or entangled in the wood splitter. Do not
operate on slippery, wet, muddy, or icy surfaces. Good
footing prevents slipping and tripping.
• Do not allow bystanders within 20 feet (6 meters) of
wood splitter during operation. Wood chips can fly out
and injure others.
• Do not step over or straddle splitter during operation.
• Do not try to split more than one log at a time. The extra
log can fly out and cause injury.
• Keep your fingers and hands away from cracks in the log
that can open while splitting.
• Always load logs by holding on the sides, never the ends.
• Do not reach into or load the splitter when the wedge is
in motion.
• When splitting logs cut unevenly, place the wide end
down and the squarest end towards the splitting wedge.
• Do not try to split logs across the grain. Some types
can burst or splinter and fly out of wood splitter causing
injury.

• Do not walk or work under a raised wood splitter or
attachment. Do not depend on the skid steer hydraulic
system to hold the wood splitter or attachment in place.
• Never consume alcohol or drugs while operating this
equipment. Consult your doctor about operating this
wood splitter while taking prescription medications.
6.2 Equipment Matching
To ensure the safe and reliable operation of the wood splitter,
it is necessary to match it with a skid steer with the correct
specifications. Use the following information as a guide in safely
matching the wood splitter to your skid steer.
Lifting capacity
The skid steer must be able to easily lift and handle the weight
of the wood splitter. The WX470 weighs 315 lb (143 kg).
Skid Steer Weight
Generally, a 40–90 hp skid steer will have sufficient weight to
provide stability for the unit when splitting or transporting.
Do
not use lighter equipment than recommended.
Hydraulic System Requirements
Recommended hydraulic oil flow is10 gpm US (38 Lpm)
6.3 Controls
The skid steer auxiliary hydraulic circuit provides power to the
wood splitter control valve.
Before starting to work, all operators should familiarize
themselves with the location and function of the wood splitter
controls. Review the
Controls
section of your Skid Steer
operator's manual for further information.
