4. Familiarization
BXC34 wood chippers cut limbs, and branches into wood chips.
Power to operate the machine is provided by a gas engine.
4.1 New Operator
WARNING!
Make sure that all operators understand how
to set the machine to a safe condition before
performing any service, maintenance, or storage
preparation. For instructions, see Safe Condition
on page 9 .
It is the responsibility of the owner and the operator to read
this manual, and to train all other operators before they work
with the machine. Follow all safety instructions.
Untrained operators are not qualified to use the machine.
They can endanger themselves and others or damage property.
4.2 Training
Each operator must be trained on the correct operating
procedures before using the machine. The
Sign-Off Form on
page 10 can be used to keep a training record.
1. Review control locations, functions, and movement
directions.
2. Move the machine to a large open area and allow the new
operator to become familiar with control functions and
machine responses.
3. When the new operator is familiar and comfortable with the
machine, they can proceed with the work.
4.3 Work Site Familiarization
It is the responsibility of the operator to be thoroughly familiar
with the work site before starting work. Avoid unsafe situations
and make every effort to prevent accidents.
When you set up a work site, consider the following things:
• Avoid close or cramped workspaces. Make sure there is
enough space and clearance for the machine and discharge
material.
• Position the machine so prevailing winds blow engine
exhaust fumes away from operator's location.
• Choose flat, level ground, and make sure the machine is
level before operating it.
• Avoid muddy or soft ground where the machine support
will sink. If soft ground is unavoidable, place boards or
plates under the machine support to increase the surface
area.
4.4 Operator Orientation
IMPORTANT! When describing controls throughout this
manual, the directions for left hand (LH), right hand (RH),
backward, and forward are determined when standing at the
hopper facing the direction of forward machine travel.
