The SNMP („

rotocol“) is used in network management
systems to monitor the state of attached devices that require the attention of an adminis-
trator. SNMP is a component of the “internet protocol suite” defined by the IETF (“Internet
Engineering Task Force”). It consists of a set of standards for network management, in-
cluding an application layer protocol, a database schema and a set of data objects.
SNMP provides management data in the form of variables on the managed systems,
which describe the system configuration. These variables can be queried (and sometimes
changed) by managing applications.
An “SNMP community string” is a text string that acts as a password. It is used to authen-
ticate messages that are sent between the management station (the SNMP manager)
and the device (the SNMP agent). The string is included in every packet transmitted be-
tween the SNMP manager and the SNMP agent.
