Do not place any objects behind the front seats that
could impede the WHIPS function
WARNING
Any contact between the front seat backrests
and the folded rear seat or a rear-facing child
seat could impede the function of the WHIPS
system. If the rear seat is folded down, the
occupied front seats must be adjusted for-
ward so that they do not touch the folded rear
seat.

Pedestrian Protection System (PPS)
The Pedestrian Protection System is designed
to help mitigate the effects of the vehicle's
impact with a pedestrian in certain types of
frontal collisions.
In certain types of frontal impacts with a pedes-
trian, sensors in the front bumper will react and
trigger PPS.
The following occurs when PPS is activated:
•
The rear section of the hood is raised.
•
An automatic alarm signal is sent to the
Volvo On Call
*
service center.
The sensors are active at speeds between
approx. 15–30 mph (25–50 km/h).
The sensors are designed to detect an impact
with an object with the characteristics of a human
leg.
There may be objects in a traffic/road envi-
ronment that emit signals to the PPS sensors
that are similar to those of an impact with a
pedestrian. An impact with an object of this
type could trigger the PPS system.
WARNING
•
Do not mount accessories or any other
objects on the front of the vehicle or the
front bumper. Doing so could cause the
PPS system to malfunction and result in
serious injuries or damage to the vehicle.
•
In order to help PPS to function properly,
the use of Volvo original windshield wiper
arms/parts is recommended.
•
If the front of the vehicle is damaged,
contact a trained and qualified Volvo serv-
ice technician to help ensure PPS system
functionality.
