1. Introduction
The locomotive decoder art. no. 5252 / DHL 161 is
most similar to the decoder art. no. 5254 / DHL 101.
Supplementary to the DHL 101 the DHL 161 may
be additionally used for DCC controlled layouts.
Though the dimensions could be reduced again,
so that the installation of the decoder in smaller lo-
comotives is much easier.
In this fact the enclosed manual for the decoder
DHL 101 (5254) is valid for the DHL 161 (5252).
The differences between the two decoders and ad-
ditional hints you can fi nd on this manual.
2. Properties
Supplementary to the manual DHL 101 (5254) the
following properties are only valid for the SELEC-
TRIX
®
system:
• block control with simple diodes
• feedback of address for identification during
operation
3. Operation
This decoder is intended for
• analogue DC operation (automatic switching)
• digital layouts using the DCC system
• digital layouts using the SELECTRIX
®
system
4. Starting DCC-Operation
Place the locomotive on the programming track
and read out the locomotive address. The default
for this address is 03.
Should the command station display read “error”
please check the wiring of the locomotive once
again. Please note the following advice:
Using the Intellibox from Uhlenbrock – possi-
bly also with other digital central units – there
is the possibility of an error message at the
beginning of programming, so that any fur-
ther application of the CVs is not possible.
To solve this problem you have to insert a
47 ohm resistor at one of the cables of the
programming track.
If the address is correct, you may now test the
functionality (e.g. direction of the motor rotation,
lights etc.) of the locomotive.
After this initial test you may adapt the settings to
match your own requirements (e.g. address, load
control etc.).
Notwithstanding to the sketches of the
enclosed manual art.no. 5254 the connector
for the auxiliary function (“ZF”) is at the place
shown at the picture on the top.
5. DCC-Programmierung
The operation characteristics of the locomotive can
be changed without limitation through program-
ming of the so called confi guration variables (CVs).
Follow the instructions of your digital command
station when programming.
For the programming please note the table of the
relevant CVs at page 4.
