Chapter 4 - Principles of Operation
4.2.8 Motherboard
The Motherboard provides the interface between the other component
boards. The motherboard provides the communications and power buses for
the component boards and connection to the front-panel assembly.
On one side, the motherboard has five card slots. All five card slots are
connected by a serial bus. The following list defines the communication and
power lines to each slot.
•
Servo Board – address, data, and control buses, serial bus, power
•
Synchro/Resolver Board – address, data, and control buses to servo
board, power
•
ORI Board – address, data, and control buses, serial bus, power
•
Autotrack Board – serial bus, power
•

The five slots are divided into two sections of three and two slots each
connected by the parallel bus. This division allows two servo boards to
operate in one digital controller.
On the other side of the motherboard are connectors for power, external
resolver reference, display power, ribbon cable connection to the front panel,
and a spare I/O connection.
4.2.9 Front Panel
The front-panel controls provide the functions necessary to allow an operator
to interface with the 3860 Digital Controller. The front panel contains a
general-purpose keypad for input of data and control over axis/mode-
independent functions. Also, a set of push buttons are used as softkeys for
menu selection using the graphics display for actuation of various system
functions. Two front-panel handwheels are used as position input devices.
The joystick can be used for manual rate control of the pedestal. Indications
of power on, travel limit/interlock condition, and alarm are provided by
LEDs on the front panel.
4.2.10 Front-panel Board Assembly
The Front-panel Board Assembly is the interface between the front-panel
components and the Operator/Remote Interface Assembly. The front-panel
board contains no active components.
