36 Using your Vertu phone
Tips to use your Vertu phone abroad
When signal reception is unstable while your Vertu phone is in use abroad,
check the following settings. Changing these settings may improve the
situation.
Network mode
1. From the Home screen, select Menu » Settings » Phone » Network
mode .

If you have not changed the default configuration, you can also select this
menu just by pressing the [Joystick] key (Right) from the Home screen and
then scrolling the

2. Select 3G or GSM as needed.

The default network mode is 3G + GSM , a dual mode in which the phone
automatically selects either 3G (WCDMA) or GSM depending on the network
availability in your current location. Since GSM is a main network used in
many countries outside Japan, changing this setting to
GSM may improve
signal reception when you are abroad.

Note that your Vertu phone operates on the 3G (WCDMA) network when it is
used in Japan. Be sure to change this setting back to either
3G + GSM (the
default setting) or to 3G , when you return to Japan from a trip abroad.
Operator selection
1. From the Home screen, select Menu » Settings » Phone » Operator
selection .

If you have not changed the default configuration, you can also select this

2. Select Manual .

Your Vertu phone displays a list of network operators (service providers) in
your current location.
3. Select an operator that has a roaming agreement with your service
provider.

Not all network operators have roaming agreements with other network
operators. Make sure you have selected a network operator here, which has a
roaming agreement with your service provider (such as VERTU Club, if you
are currently using the VERTU Club SIM card).

When you return to Japan from a trip abroad, be sure to change this setting
back to
Automatic (the default setting).
Using network services (Voicemail, Call divert/
forwarding, etc.) while roaming
Depending on the SIM card that is currently in use on your Vertu phone,
you may need some extra steps or settings to use the Voicemail or Call
divert / Call forwarding services abroad.
For example, if you are a VERTU Club SIM card user frequently travelling
abroad, you will need such an extra step as dialling 159 (a setting which we
call “Remote Access setting”) before leaving Japan in order to set up the
Voicemail service for use abroad. Or to listen to the messages left on the
Voicemail centre while you are abroad, you will also need to dial +8190310,
followed by 1416 or 1417 (a normal four-digit Voice mailbox access number
to be dialled when you are in Japan).
Thus, the respective service providers may offer network services with their
own unique (and sometimes complex) variations. For information on these
variations, contact your service provider or Vertu Customer Service (page 34).
The following are the steps required for VERTU Club SIM card users to set
up the Voicemail or Call forwarding service while in Japan. (Note: Voicemail
and Call forwarding cannot be used at the same time.)
1. From the Home screen, select Menu » Settings » Call .
2. Select either Voicemail or Call forwarding .
3. Select Activate , and then either All voice calls or If not answered .
In addition, those users are also advised to have some extra steps to use
the Voicemail or Call forwarding service when abroad. Before leaving
Japan for a trip overseas, please contact Vertu Customer Service (page
34) or check the Vertu official web site for more details.
