Troubleshooting
GPS Antenna Test
To test the GPS Antenna do the following:
1. At the control panel, turn the control panel dis-
connect to on.
2. Turn on Service Mode by pushing
Menu
,
Sys-
tem
,
Diagnostics
,
Service Mode
, and then
checking the
Service Mode
checkbox.
3. Start the computer and open Valmont Terminal.
4. Plug USB to serial adapter into computer. See
Figure 75-1.
5. At the GPS tower box, turn tower box disconnect
off and unplug RJ11 plug from the PLC board.
6. Plug the RJ11 plug into the GPS Antenna Tester
(03E3638). See Figure 75-1.
7. Plug the USB to serial adapter into the GPS An-
tenna Tester. See Figure 75-1.
8. Turn the GPS tower box disconnect to on. The
GPS tower box power supply ON indicator light
should be lit.
9. On the Valmont Terminal screen, select the Com
Port and set the baud rate to 4800.
10. Click Open Port.
• The GGA messages should start streaming
across the screen once every second or once
every four seconds depending on the type of
GPS antenna. See Figure 75-2.

• GPS lock on the satellites is indicated by the
number following “W” in the message.
» 0 = No GPS lock
» 1 = Standard GPS lock
»
2 = DGPS lock
• If no messages are seen:
» Check all connections
» Verify 12 VDC to the GPS antenna
»
Retest GPS antenna
» Replace Antenna
• If message appears to be in a different format
other than what is shown in Figure 75-2, the
GPS antenna may not be programmed cor-
rectly and should be replaced.
