DeWALT Orbital Sander (DWE-6421))
The DeWALT orbital sander is used to sand surfaces to
remove material or smooth the surface. The following rules
must be observed when using it.
•
Students must have taken the Baum Family Maker Space
basic lab orientation and safety training.
•
This is a YELLOW category equipment. Students must
have received additional training specific for this piece of
equipment from Maker Space staff or qualified student
workers.
•
Do not use the sander if you are unsure about any aspect of its operation.
•
Eye protection must be used at all times when using the sander.
•
The sander creates a significant amount dust, not all of which ends up in the dust collection
bag. It is advised that you wear a shop apron or similar clothing to prevent the material from
being thrown onto your clothes.
•
If possible, use the sander in the Maker Space area designated for sanding and grinding
operations where the curtain can be closed to minimize the spread of the dust.
•
Before using it make sure you have familiarized yourself with the location and action of the
start/stop switch.
•
Do not have any loose clothing above the level of material the sander will be used on.
•
Long hair must be tied back in such a way that it cannot reach the sander during operation.
Make sure this cannot happen if you turn your head away from the sander thereby bringing
the back of your head closer to the sander.
•
Only use sanding pads that have been provided by the lab staff or approved by them for use.
•
The sander uses 5” diameter “hook-and-loop” (H&L) pads. Do not use adhesive pads.
•
Do not use sanding pads that are worn out and/or torn.
•
The sanding pad must be pressed down sufficiently on the sander’s base to ensure that hooks
and loops on the two surfaces have engaged and are holding the sanding pad on the base.
•
Always maintain a firm grip on the sander when using it and keep it under control when it is
contacting the material to be sanded.
•
When not using it turn the sander off. Let it come to a complete stop before placing it on a
work surface.
•
If any type of unsafe condition is noted, notify the lab manager or your professor. If
necessary, place a sign on the sander warning other to not use it due to the problem.
Please refer to the manufacturer’s manual on the following pages for additional information on
the operation of the DeWALT handheld sander.
