Example Dial Plan
MAC Address
Media Access Control address. Unique 48-bit identifier attached to network
adapters.
MDI-X
Media Dependent Interface crossover (X). The send and receive pins are
inverted. This MDI allows the connection of two endpoints without using a
crossover cable. When Auto MDI-X is available, the MDI can switch between
regular MDI and MDI-X automatically, depending on the connected device.
MIB
Management Information Base. A type of database used to manage the devices
in a communications network.
MWI
Message Waiting Indicator. A signal, typically a LED, to notify the user that new
mailbox messages have arrived.
P
PBX
Private Branch Exchange. Private telephone system that connects the internal
devices to each other and to the ISDN network.
PCM
Pulse Code Modulation. A digital representation of an analog signal, e. g. audio
data, which consists of quantized samples taken in regular time intervals.
PING
Packet Internet Gro(u)per. A program to test whether a connection can be made
to a defined IP target. Data is sent to the target and returned from there during the
test.
PoE
Power over Ethernet. The IEEE 802.3af standard specifies how to supply power
to compliant devices over Ethernet cabling (10/100Base-T).
Port
Ports are used in IP networks to permit several communication connections
simultaneously. Different services often have different port numbers.
PSTN
Public Switched Telephone Network. The network of the world's public circuit-
switched telephone networks.
