PhenoMaster | Hardware Operating Instructions
Species-specific software
If one system is to be used for measurements on different species, e.g., mouse and rat, use of a
species-specific software, e.g., 'PhenoMaster rat' is required.
The temperature sensors - if available - are connected to the 5-pin "Temperature" ports "1...8" on the
rear panel of the Control Unit(s). The connections for cages "9...N" are made at the Slave Control
Unit.
In systems with drinking and feeding sensors, you should ensure that the sensor cables for the
temperature measurements (5-pin) are not confused with those for the drinking and feeding sensors
(6-pin). We recommend marking the cables accordingly.
The "Sample IN" inlet of the Control Unit is connected to the outlet of the Air Drying Unit via the
separating bottle. The sample air outlet "Sample OUT" is used for disposal of measured air and for
connecting the High-Speed Sensor Unit for O2 and CO2 measurements.

System configuration
This section describes the connections between a Calorimetry Master Control Unit and a High-Speed
Sensor Unit of a CaloSys module - to be operated with manual calibration (see Sections 11.1.1.1
(push principle), 11.1.2.1 (pull principle)). For instructions about the connections between High-Speed
Sensor Unit and PC of a CaloSys module - to be operated with automatic or manual calibration, see
Sections 11.1.1.2 (push principle), 11.1.2.2 (pull principle). For instructions about the connections
between multiple High-Speed Sensor Units and PC of a CaloSys module - to be operated with
automatic or manual calibration, see Section 11.1.2.3. High-Speed Sensor Units are connected in
series and selected High-Speed Sensor Unit(s) are connected to USB-RS485 converter box. The
converter box will then be connected to USB port of the PC.
Optionally, on the Calorimetry Master Control Unit for use with a separate High-Speed Sensor Unit
there is a further "O2/CO2" port that can be used for connecting a cable for data communication
between the two Units.
The sample air, which is led into the Calorimetry Master Control Unit´s "Sample IN" inlet, is led into
the separate High-Speed Sensor Unit via the "Sample OUT" outlet.
