upLED™
3 Operation
13. To turn off the LED, either turn it off in the software, or turn it off on the power dial on the
device by turning it counter-clockwise, or unplug/switch off the power supply.
3.5 Manual Control without Software
LEDs can also be controlled through the upLED™ without the upSERIES™ Software package.
When using the upLED™ without the software, please follow these instructions:
a) Start the LED automatically, immediately after connection to the power supply with a
current previously set in the upSERIES Software
This is the fastest way to drive an LED with the upLED™. Please first activate this option in
the upSERIES™ Software package by selecting "Repower LED after Power Cycle" as de-
scribed in the
. Now, even when the software is turned off, the LED will emit
light immediately after power is supplied to the upLED™.
Current used:
·
The current applied to the LED depends on the users software setting. If the current source
is set to ‘Potentiometer’, the LED lights up with the current set by the potentiometer value in
the moment of power up.
·
If the option ‘User-defined’ was previously activated in the software, the LED lights up with
the user defined current as set in the software and written to the upLED™ memory.
·
If USB is still connected but the upSERIES Software is switched off and the power supply is
reconnected to the upLED™, the LED will be repowered with the current last used before
disconnection of the power supply or stays off if it was off.
b) Start the LED manually by turning the POWER dial on the upLED™
When the upSERIES™ Software and the upLED™ are NOT set to "Repower LED after
Power Cycle", the user needs to adjust the current to drive the LED by turning the POWER
dial on the
. In that case, please follow the following instructions:
1. Connect the LED to the upLED™.
2. Use a slotted screw driver (1.8 to 2.4 mm; 0.07'' to 3/32'') to turn the POWER dial to the
lowest position by turning counter-clockwise.
3. Connect the upLED™ to the prepared power supply. Ensure to push the 2-connection
power supply adapter into the upLED™ receptacle and switch on the power supply. The
status LED will blink green.
Warning
The LED may immediately start in case the upSERIES™ software was previ-
ously configured accordingly as described above.
4. Increase the current for the LED by turning the POWER dial in the clockwise direction.
Please note that the increase in current is linear when using the POWER dial or the soft-
ware. The POWER dial will scale the maximal current range set by the current limit. When
using an LED from Thorlabs, the current limit of the LED is read out by the upLED™ from
the EEPROM of the LED.
Whenever an LED without a Thorlabs EEPROM is used, the current limit is set to the max-
imum current of the upLED™ (1.2 A).
Warning
The LED may be destroyed by turning the Potentiometer too far, beyond the
maximum current of an LED in the clockwise direction!
Note
To avoid LED damage use the software setting “User Current Limit” and set it to
the maximum forward current of your LED connected or a lower value. This option may be
