Cleaning the Ion Source Components

7. Reinstall the ion volume.
a.
Attach the ion volume to the end of the ion volume tool.
b. Align the ion volume arrow so it is facing up.
c.
Push the ion volume tool through the magnet yoke until you hear the ion volume
snap into place.
d. Turn the handle of the ion volume tool clockwise 30
º
to disengage the ion volume.
8. Reattach the vacuum manifold cover.
9. Reattach the front and top covers.
10. Restart the DSQ II.
Cleaning the Ion Source, Lenses and Prefilter
To clean the ion source, lenses, and prefilter, you will need:
• Cleaning supplies for non-stainless steel or hybrid parts
• Cleaning supplies for stainless steel parts
• Forceps
• Gloves, clean, lint- and powder-free
• Lens alignment tool
• Lint-free cloth
• Wrench, Allen, 2.5 mm
• Wrench, Allen, 3.0 mm
If cleaning the ion volume does not restore system performance, try cleaning the ion source
and prefilter. System performance is determined by your benchmark tests, as described in
"
Preparing the DSQ II for Maintenance" on page 25
. The ion source lenses (especially lens 1)
come in direct contact with samples introduced into the DSQ II and need to be cleaned
periodically (though not as often as the ion volume).
