Cleaning Stainless Steel Components
To clean stainless steel components, you will need:
• Acetone, reagent grade (or other suitable polar solvent)
• Aluminum oxide abrasive, number 600
• Applicators, cotton-tipped
• Beaker, 450 mL
• De-ionized water
• Detergent (Alconox, Micro, or equivalent)
• Dremel rotary tool or equivalent (recommended)
• Foil, aluminum
• Forceps
• Gas, clean and dry (N
2
or He)
• Gloves, latex, impermeable
• Gloves, clean, lint- and powder-free
• Glycerol, reagent grade
• Lint-free cloth
• Protective eyewear
• Tap water
• Toothbrush, soft
• Ultrasonic cleaner
1. Remove contaminants from all the components you are cleaning.
a.
Use a slurry of #600 aluminum oxide (PN 32000-60340) in glycerol and a cleaning
brush or cotton-tipped applicator (PN A0301-02000) to clean each component.
Contamination can be indicated by a dark or discolored area, but it is often invisible.
The heaviest contamination is usually found around the apertures. For example, the
electron entrance hole of the ion volume.
b. Clean each component thoroughly, even if no contamination is visible.
c.
Cut the wooden end of an applicator at an angle and use it to clean the crevices of a
component.
CAUTION - INSTRUMENT DAMAGE.
Do NOT use this procedure to clean ceramic,
aluminum, or gold-plated parts. Also, this procedure should not be used on the prefilter,
electron multiplier, conversion dynode, quadrupole, or anode feedthrough.
WARNING - MATERIAL AND EYE HAZARD.
Wear impermeable laboratory gloves and
eye protection when cleaning components.
Tip
To clean components faster, use a Dremel® tool with the polishing swab at its lowest
speed. Keep the tool away from possible hazards, such as standing water or flammable
solvents.
