Vacuum System and Gas Inlets
This chapter describes the theory of operations for the vacuum system and gas inlets.
Vacuum System
Vacuum system components maintain the low pressure necessary for the ion source,
quadrupole, and ion detector to operate properly. The vacuum manifold, which houses the
ion source, quadrupole, and ion detector, is pumped (or evacuated) by the high vacuum
(turbomolecular) pump. All components, except the rotary-vane pump, are located around
the vacuum manifold.
The vacuum system consists of the following components:
• Fore pressure gauge
• High vacuum pump
• Ion gauge (upgrade)
• Rotary-vane pump
• Vacuum manifold
