This manual is intended to familiarize personnel with the
safe operation and maintenance procedures for the
Tempo AT8L LAN Toner 2 Test Set. Please read this
entire manual before operating the tool, and keep this
manual available to all personnel. Replacement
manuals are available upon request at no extra charge.
Safety
Safety is essential in the use and maintenance of Tempo
tools and equipment. This instruction manual and any
markings on the tool provide information for avoiding
hazards and unsafe practices related to the use of this
tool. Observe all of the safety information provided.
Description
The Tempo AT8L LAN Toner 2 is intended to provide
tone for tracing and test features for troubleshooting
both Voice and Data wiring or cables. Useful for voltage
polarity and short circuit testing, the LAN Toner 2
includes a selectable warble tone and talk battery
supply. More than just an ordinary tone generator, it
further combines the troubleshooting capability of a
professional tracing tone generator with the versatility of
a modular breakout adapter.
Additional features include:
• Blink a LAN hub, switch port, or PC activity light to
identify a cable connection
• Check for active LAN service in a jack or cable
• Send tracing tone and blink the hub at the same time
• Apply tracing tone flexibly depending on cable type
and kind of tracing needed
• Compatible with all industry standard tone tracing
probes including the following Tempo tone probes:

Operation
The LEDs on the face of the LAN Toner 2 provide
indication of operating mode and result. The pushbutton
control switch cycles the mode across the top row of
LEDs, while the lower row
shows the result or condition
detected in that mode.
To activate the LAN Toner 2,
press and hold the
pushbutton until the TONE 1
LED comes on.
Note: When turned on, the
unit will always default to TONE 1 mode.
Subsequent presses will cycle the unit through each
mode: TONE 2, CONT, HUB BLINK, HUB DETECT,
TONE 1, etc. To turn off the unit, press and hold the
pushbutton until the active LED goes out.
Battery Test
Before connecting to a line, do a quick check of the LAN
Toner 2 to be sure the battery is good.
1. Activate the LAN Toner 2 and select CONT mode;
then connect the red and black test leads together.
2. If the LOW BATT LED does not come on, the battery
is suitable for use.
Identifying a Voice Circuit (tip & ring wire pair)
Using the Polarity Test
1. Switch the LAN Toner 2 to OFF mode.
2. Use one of the following methods to connect the LAN
Toner 2 to the circuit under test:
•
For wire pairs:
Clip the black lead to one wire of
the pair under test and the red lead to the other
wire.
•
For modular jacks (6- or 8-position):
Insert the
modular plug of the LAN Toner 2 into the jack.
Connect the red lead to the metal Tab 4 on the LAN
Toner 2 and the black lead to Tab 5.
3. A bright green CONT/POL LED indicates voice
service voltage with normal polarity — the red lead is
connected to the “ring” side of a properly wired voice
circuit. A bright red LED means there is probably
service — just that the voltage polarity is backwards.
Note: A dim LED indicates either a busy (off-hook) or
faulted line. A red and green flickering LED (may appear
yellow) that comes and goes indicates the voice circuit is
ringing (AC ring voltage).
If the CONT/POL LED does not light, the leads are
connected to a dead voice circuit, an unused cable, or a
LAN data circuit.
Verifying a Voice Line or Jack
Note: Voice service must be present to perform this
test — see the procedure above to verify.
1. Switch the LAN Toner 2 to OFF mode.
2. Connect the LAN Toner 2 to the circuit under test:
•
For modular jacks (6- or 8-position):
Insert the
modular plug of the LAN Toner 2 into the jack.
Connect the red lead to the metal Tab 4 on the LAN
Toner 2 and the black lead to Tab 5.
•
For an exposed wire pair:
Connect the black lead
to one wire of the circuit under test and the red lead
to the other wire.
3. Place a call to the line to be verified. If the unit is
connected to the correct line, the CONT/POL LED
will flicker red and green (may appear yellow).

Description

Fonctionnement

rouge vif indique la présence probable de service —
mais avec une polarité de tension inversée.
Remarque : Une DEL faiblement illuminée indique une

Operación

Verificación de la pila

Beschreibung
Der Tempo AT8L LAN Toner 2 dient zur Tonerzeugung
für die Signalverfolgung und bietet Prüffunktionen zur
Störungssuche von Sprach- und Datenschaltkreisen

Bedienung
Die LEDs auf der Vorderseite des LAN Toner 2 zeigen
den Betriebsmodus und das Ergebnis an. Durch

Modus gewechselt. Dieser Moduswechsel wird in der

verwendet standardmäßig den Modus TONE 1 (TON 1).
Nochmaliges Betätigen der Taste schaltet das Gerät
durch die einzelnen Betriebsmodi: TONE 2 (TON 2),
CONT (KONT.), HUB BLINK (HUB BLINKT), HUB
DETECT (HUB ERKANNT), TONE 1 (TON 1) usw. Um
das Gerät auszuschalten, die Drucktaste betätigen und
halten, bis die aktive LED erloschen ist.
Batterietest
Vor dem Anschluss an eine Leitung kurz den LAN Toner
2 prüfen, um sicherzustellen, dass die Batterie
ordnungsgemäß funktioniert.
1. Den LAN Toner 2 einschalten, den Modus CONT
(KONT.) wählen und die roten und schwarzen
Testleitungen dann miteinander verbinden.
2. Wenn die LED LOW BATT (BATT. NIEDRIG) nicht
aufleuchtet, befindet sich die Batterie in
einwandfreiem Zustand.
Identifizieren eines Sprechkreises
(a/b-Leitungspaar) mit dem Polaritätstest
1. Den LAN Toner 2 auf OFF (AUS) stellen.
2. Den LAN Toner 2 mit einer der folgenden Methoden
an dem zu testenden Kreis anschließen.
•
Für Leiterpaare:
Die schwarze Leitung an eine
Leitung des zu testenden Paares und die rote
Leitung an die andere Leitung anbringen.
•
Für Modularbuchsen (6- oder 8-polig):
Den
Modulstecker des LAN Toner 2 in die Buchse
stecken. Die rote Leitung mit dem metallenen
Kontakt 4 des LAN Toner 2 und die schwarze
Leitung mit Kontakt 5 verbinden.
3. Die hellgrüne LED CONT/POL (KONT./POL.) zeigt
die Spannung für den Fernsprechdienst mit normaler
Polarität an – die rote Leitung ist mit der b-Seite eines
korrekt verdrahteten Sprechkreises verbunden. Eine
hellrote LED zeigt an, dass der Dienst wahrscheinlich
vorhanden ist und nur die Spannungspolarität
umgekehrt ist.
Hinweis: Durch eine schwach leuchtende LED wird eine
belegte oder fehlerhafte Leitung angezeigt. Eine rot und
grün blinkende LED (kann als gelb erscheinen) zeigt an,
dass der Wecker im Sprechkreis klingelt
(Rufwechselspannung).
Falls die LED CONT/POL (KONT./POL.) nicht leuchtet,
sind die Leitungen entweder mit einem fehlerhaften
Sprechkreis, einer unbenutzten Leitung oder einem
LAN-Datenkreis verbunden.
