In tro d u c tio n
The T e k tro n ix 434 Oscilloscope is a solid-state portable
in stru m e n t th a t com bines small size and lig h t w eight w ith
the a b ility to make precision waveform measurements. It is
designed fo r general-purpose applications where display
storage is desired, along w ith conventional (non-store)
ope ra tio n . The in stru m e n t is m echanically designed to w it h
stand the shock, v ib ra tio n , and o th e r extremes o f e n v iro n
m e n t associated w ith p o rta b ility .
The dual-channel D C -to-25 megahertz vertical system
provides calibrated d e fle c tio n factors fro m 1 m illiv o lt to 10
vo lts /d iv is io n . The trigger circ u its provide stable triggering
over the fu ll range o f vertical frequency response. The h o ri
zontal d e fle c tio n system provides calibrated unm agnified
sweep rates fro m 5 seconds to 0.2 m icrosecond/division. A
push-to-turn direct-reading six-p o sitio n m agnifier allows
sweep m a g n ifica tio n up to a m a xim u m o f 50 tim es and
provides a m axim um sweep rate o f 0.02 m icrosecond/
d ivisio n .
X -Y measurements can be made applying the vertical (Y)
signal to one o f th e vertical in p u t connectors (appropriate
vertical mode o f o peration selected) and the h o riz o n ta l (X )
signal to the E X T H O R IZ c o n n e cto r on the in stru m e n t rear
panel (T IM E /D IV sw itch set to E X T H O R IZ ).
The cathode-ray tube is a d ire c t view , bistable storage
tu b e having an 8 X 10 division display area divided in to tw o
4 X 1 0 division storage screens. The storage screens are
independently co n tro lle d fo r split-screen applications. A
non-storing area to the le ft o f the storage screens perm its
beam lo ca tio n w ith o u t d istu rb in g a stored display.
The regulated low-voltage power supply assures th a t
in stru m e n t perform ance is n o t affected by variations in line
voltage and frequency. A new design lig h t-w e ig h t, high
e ffic ie n c y pow er supply used in th e 434 perm its instru m e n t
o peration over a w ide range o f line voltages and frequencies
w ith o u t line voltage range selection.
In fo rm a tio n given in th is in s tru c tio n manual applies to
the R 434 also unless otherw ise indicated. The R 434 is
e le c tric a lly identical to the 434, b u t is adapted fo r m o u n tin g
in a standard 19-inch rack. R ackm ounting in s tru c tio n s and
a dim ensional draw ing fo r th e R 434 are provided in Section
6 o f th is manual.
The electrical characteristics w h ich fo llo w are divided
in to tw o categories. C haracteristics listed in the Performance
R equirem ent colum n are in stru m e n t specifications, and are
checked in the Performance Check procedure provided in
the C a lib ra tio n section. Data in the Supplem ental In fo rm a
tio n colum n does n o t c o n s titu te in stru m e n t specifications
and is provided fo r reference o n ly . The fo llo w in g electrical
characteristics apply over an am bient tem perature range o f
— 15°C to +55°C , except as otherwise indicated. W arm-up
tim e fo r given accuracy is 30 minutes.
