Gapping Procedures
Important!
It is important to keep the internal
components of the upper platen as close to operating
temperature as possible while gapping. This is done to
help minimize gap drift due to thermal expansion of the
motor tray. To keep the loss of heat at a minimum, keep
the platen cover on at all times except when adjusting the
gap system.
Note:
Service platen covers are available so that gap
adjustments can be made through the cover and there is
no heat loss. The part number is X82151 for “C” series
grills and X82158 for “L” series grills.
Before the gapping procedure can be started, the grill
must be up to cooking temperature and have been cycled
for a minimum of 45 minutes.
Note:
Setting the gap is a two-step process that must be
performed in this order:
1. Level the upper platen.
The upper platen is adjusted to be parallel with the
lower cook surface. This step is referred to as
“leveling the upper platen”. It is accomplished by
adjusting the four corners of the platen, using the
0.255 in. GO NO-GO gauge (X79617).
2. Adjust the gap offset.
Once the platen is properly leveled, the gap setting is
fine-tuned, using the gap calibration mode in the
control.
Leveling the Upper Platen
1. Press and hold the PROGRAM key for 5 seconds to
enter the Program mode.

2. Enter the service password

and press the OK
key.

3. Press the GAP CALIBRATION key to enter the Gap
Calibration mode.

4. Press the STANDBY button to lower the platen into
the Standby position (0.255 in.).
5. Remove the upper platen cover.
6. Set the gap offset to “0” before making an
adjustment.
7. Using a 3/8 in. straight-blade screwdriver, loosen the
locknut on the top side of the gap adjust block in all
four corners.
Note:
Place the platen cover or service cover back
on top of the platen shroud between adjustments to
prevent heat loss, which could lead to inconsistent
gap readings.
