COM1 and COM2 accept and output standard RS-232 signal voltage levels. Using ordinary
communications software, these ports can be used for any common serial communication
tasks (point-to-point or external modem communications).
When connecting a serial cable to COM1, feed the cable through the cable cut-out area at the
back of the unit. Alternatively, the cable access opening at the right side of the unit may be
used.
Connecting the Unit to an Ethernet LAN
Each unit has a built-in Ethernet controller with a twisted-pair interface for connection to the
outside world. The networking support built into the computer is based on the SMC 91C94
Ethernet chip (which is software compatible with the 91C92 chip). The Ethernet chip uses a
small portion of the I/O address space of the FMT 3000 (0x300) and it uses a single interrupt
level (IRQ 9 or 10).
