Best Practices for the Sun StorEdge 3510 and 3511 FC Arrays

Array Management Tools
The Sun StorEdge 3500 series arrays use the same management interfaces and
techniques. The StorEdge 3500 series arrays can be configured and monitored using
the following methods as appropriate:
Sun StorEdge 3500 series arrays can be configured and monitored through any of the
following methods:
■
Using the out-of-band serial port connection (RAID only), a Solaris
tip
session or
terminal emulation program for other supported operating systems can be used
to access an array’s internal firmware application. All procedures can be
performed by using the firmware’s terminal interface via the COM port.
■
Using the out-of-band Ethernet port connection, Sun StorEdge Configuration
Service software or the Sun StorEdge CLI can configure and manage an array
from a host system.
■
To set up and use the Configuration Service software package, refer to the
Sun
StorEdge 3000 Family Configuration Service User's Guide
.
■
The CLI is installed as part of the
SUNWsccli
package. The main advantages
of the CLI are that commands can be scripted and information can be passed to
other programs. Information about CLI functionality can be found in the
Sun
StorEdge 3000 Family CLI User’s Guide
, and in the
sccli
man page once the
package is installed.
■
The StorEdge 3511 SATA array will respond more slowly than the StorEdge
3510 FC Array when being managed via either CLI or Configuration Service.
Due to this, it is not recommended to use either in-band management method
with the StorEdge 3511 SATA array.
■
Using the out-of-band Ethernet port connection,
telnet
can be used to access the
firmware application. All procedures except the initial assignment of an IP
address can be done through an Ethernet port connection. Refer to the
Sun
StorEdge 3000 Family Installation, Operation and Service Manual
for your array for
more information.
Note –
The StorEdge 3511 SATA array should only be managed with the out-of-
band methods which access the firmware application via Ethernet or serial
connections.
Caution –
In-band configuration options from a host system include the Sun
StorEdge Configuration Service software or the command-line interface (CLI). If you
assign an IP address to an array in order to manage it out-of-band, for security
reasons make sure that the IP address is on a private network, rather than a publicly
routable network.
