GENERAL COMPRESSOR SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Safety is a prime consideration in the design and manufacture of the compressor. Ultimately, the
responsibility for safe operation rests with the individuals who use and maintain the compressor. The
following safety precautions are offered as a guide for the safe operation and maintenance of this
machinery:
WARNING!
Do not use air from this compressor for breathing, as it may contain colorless, odorless yet lethal gases.
Severe injury or death may result within a few seconds.
»
Only trained and authorized personnel who have read and understand this user’s manual should operate
the air compressor. Failure to follow the instructions, procedures and safety precautions in this manual
will increase the possibility of accidents and injuries.
»
Never start the compressor unless it is safe to do so. Do not attempt to operate the air compressor
with a known unsafe condition. If an unsafe condition exists or maintenance is required, disconnect and
lockout the main power source to render it inoperative and tag the air compressor so others who may
not know of the unsafe condition cannot attempt to operate it until the unsafe condition is corrected.
»
Use and operate the air compressor only in full compliance with all pertinent Federal, State and Local
codes or requirements including OShA, EPA and other relevant agency requirements.
»
Do not modify this compressor without consulting the manufacturer and receiving specific written
approval.
»
Do not use accessories (such as tools, valves, filters, hoses, piping dryers, etc.) that are rated lower
than the maximum pressure or temperature rating of this air compressor. Do not exceed the accessory
component manufacturer’s rated safe operating pressure or temperature for these items.
»
Air gun cleaning devices must not be used at pressures above 30 psi (2 bar). Always use an appropriate
regulator to reduce pressure at the cleaning tool and always use with effective chip guarding and
personal protective equipment per OShA Standard 29 CFR 1910.242 (b).
»
Keep all parts of the body away from all potential points of air discharge, including pressure relief valve
ports, hoses or tools.
»
Avoid bodily contact with hot oil, hot surfaces, sharp edges and corners.
»
Serious injury or death may result from horseplay with air hoses and compressed air. Do not do it, do not
allow it!
»
Do not operate the compressor if there is a possibility of ingesting flammable, toxic or explosive fumes,
mists or particulate.
»
Do not operate the compressor with its fan guard removed.
»
Keep clothing, hands, arms and other parts of the body away from the fan and drive coupling.
»
Wear OShA approved personal protective gear including gloves, safety shoes, safety glasses, head
covering and ear protection when working on or around the compressor.
»
Wear snug-fitting clothing (no neckties) and confine long hair when working around the compressor.
»
Keep an adequate first-aid kit nearby. Obtain medical assistance promptly in case of injury. Do not
ignore small cuts, burns or minor eye injuries as they may lead to infection.
»
Do not permit air from this compressor to contact foodstuff except in compliance with FDA Standard
21 CFR 178.3570 “Code of Federal Regulations”, and all other applicable regulations. Use food grade
lubricant for such applications.
»
Keep all parts of the body, tools or other conductive objects away from exposed live parts of the
electrical system. Maintain dry footing, stand on insulating surfaces and do not contact any other
portion of the compressor when making adjustments.
Not all hazards can be anticipated, and the operator of the equipment is ultimately responsible for
identifying hazardous and dangerous conditions, avoiding dangerous operation and preventing accidents.
1.2
SAFETY DECALS
Sullivan-Palatek compressors are all equipped with brightly colored, weather-resistant, pictorial/verbal
decals. These are designed to warn the operator against potential hazards in order to minimize risk of
property damage, bodily injury and/or death. The warning decals are located where the danger is most
prevalent. All operators must be aware of the warning decals and follow the instructions.
