9.4 Updating the EU Software via SUSI
The system software of the EU may also be updated from a PC or lap-
top, using the Sperry Universal Service Instrument application (SUSI).
Important bugfix releases or software improvements will be announced
to service representatives and customers via Sperry Marine Hamburg
service bulletins.
Following a new software release, Sperry Marine will provide the
required Sperry Universal Service Instrument (SUSI) application
together with the EU update files in one zipfile following the naming
convention: „SUSI Rev 1.xxx with updates DD.MM.YYYY“.
The EU update zipfile is available via download for authorized field ser-
vice personnel from the Sperry Marine Extranet.
The update may be carried out via an USB or via an RS-232 connection,
using SUSI‘s Update Flash mode.
In case of an USB connection, a standard USB cable is required, carrying
type A and type B male connectors at the computer’s and the electronic
unit‘s end respectively.
In case of an RS-232 connection, a special cable is required to connect to
the receptacle J4 on the electronics unit PCB. The ready made cable is
available from Sperry Marine under Stock No. 022939.
The instructions below assume that you have successfully installed
SUSI on a laptop or PC.
If you are using a USB connection, you must also install the FTDI virtual
COM port driver included with SUSI.

If you have not yet installed SUSI, refer first to the SUSI Installation
Guide, Sperry document no. 056358, before proceeding with the
update procedure below.
CAUTION
Risk of inoperable device state through failure during software update
Updating software through SUSI‘s Flash Update mode is a risky opera-
tion, as SUSI writes directly to the device’s flash memory. Furthermore,
SUSI cannot verify whether the file supplied is indeed intended for the
device under service.Under adverse circumstances, a failure during the
update may leave the device in an inoperable state.
Never interrupt an update in progress once started.
