17.2.5 TB051101 Prevention of unintended oxygen leaks
SLE ventilators have chassis holes and a fan system intended to flush ambient air through
internally enclosed compartments. This is to prevent any unintended oxygen leak from
building-up to a hazardous level.
Apart from the inflammable nature of oxygen, it also has an aging effect on mechanical parts.
Prolonged exposure to high oxygen concentration, of parts not intended for this, can lead to
premature end-of-life. We consider, in particular, here a possible risk to the SLE2000HFO and
SLE rotary jet drive belt and motor, which are situated behind the exhalation block.
Combined with ventilating a patient with oxygen rich gas, the following illustrates unintended
fault conditions that may cause gas to leak from the jet orifices in the exhalation block, hence
increasing the oxygen concentration in air surrounding the jet belt and motor. For a leak to be
serious, it would be of a magnitude that it is clearly audible by ear.
Worn/damaged o-ring seals and obstructed fan ducts, in isolation, have not shown to result in
any increased build-up of oxygen concentrations inside the ventilator. However, these factors
do have an enhancing effect when occurring in combination with blocked patient gas filters or a
dislodged exhalation block.
