A parity bit , or check bit is a bit added to the end of a string of binary code that
indicates whether the number of bits in the string with the value one is even
or odd. Parity bits are used as the simplest form of error detecting code. [...]
In serial data transmission, a common format is 7 data bits, an even parity bit,
and one or two stop bits. This format neatly accommodates all the 7-bit ASCII
characters in a convenient 8-bit byte. Other formats are possible; 8 bits of data
plus a parity bit can convey all 8-bit byte values.

Handshake
When you set up a serial line to an external device, the handshake will help you to
control the flow of data. The handshake allows the external device to stop sending
data if the Processor Unit is not ready for it. It also prevents the Processor Unit from
sending data when the external device is not ready for it.
In information technology, and related fields, handshaking is an automated
process of negotiation that dynamically sets parameters of a communications
channel established between two entities before normal communication over
the channel begins. It follows the physical establishment of the channel and
precedes normal information transfer. The handshaking process usually takes
place in order to establish rules for communication when a computer sets about
communicating with a foreign device. When a computer communicates with
another device like a modem, printer, or network server, it needs to handshake
with it to establish a connection
