Chapter 2: Install the server hardware
23
Install the server in a rack
Before you begin
■ You have read the safety instructions in the
Product Information Guide
supplied with your server.
■ For first time installers, you have read the
Rack Installation Instructions
included in the rail kit. The
rail kit instructions also explain stabilizing the rack, installing devices, and power distribution.
■ You have identified the rack location for the left rail. Each server requires 2U of rack space.
Caution:
Two people are required to safely install the server hardware in a rack. The
Rack Installation
Instructions
included in the rail kit box contain important safety and procedural information.
Procedure overview
You install the rails, which are included in the shipping carton, at the lowest available U space in the
rack enclosure. You then work up from the bottom of the rack to add additional rails. After installing the
rails, you then mount each server into the rails. The rail kit included in the shipping carton contains two
sliding rail tool-less (fasteners optional) assemblies, left and right, which consist of inner rail assemblies
that attach to the sides of the server and outer rail assemblies that connect to the rack.
Note:
Two screws are provided with the rack assembly for optionally attaching the server to the rack to
provide additional protection if the rack will be moved with the server installed.
Procedure
1.
Attach the inner rails to the sides of the server by aligning the three keyed slots on each rail with the
pegs on the server and then sliding the rails forward to lock them in place. The front slot on each rail
has a metal locking clip to hold the rails in place.
2.
Open the front securing plate on each slide rail assembly by pushing the green arrow button toward
the rear.
3.
Use the following steps to install the slide rail assemblies into the rack:
a) Align the slide assembly with the rack front post hole.
b) Insert the mounting pegs on the slide assembly into the rack post holes from the outside front.
c) Push the securing plate release button (marked PUSH) to lock the pegs in place.
d) Adjust the slide rail length and then push the rear pegs into the rear post holes.
4.
Pull the inner slide rails out to the front until they lock in place.
5.
Insert the server into the slide rails by aligning the rear of the server rails with the front of the rack
slide rails and sliding the server in until it stops at the internal rail stops.
