Spontaneous Pressure Support
For pressure support of insufficient spontaneous
breathing.
The function of the device in supporting insufficient
spontaneous breathing is similar to that of the
anaesthetist who manually assists and monitors
the patient's spontaneous breathing by feeling the
breathing bag.
The device takes over the inspiration work partially,
however the patient retains control of spontaneous
breathing.
The CPAP system supplies the spontaneously
breathing patient with breathing gas, even with low
inspiration efforts.
Pressure support PS is started when spontaneous
inspiration flow reaches the set value of the flow
trigger.
The device then generates a pressure increase,
which is adjustable to patient breathing demand, up
to the preselected PS pressure

– With a steep ramp, Carina supports insufficient
spontaneous breathing on the part of the patient
by providing high peak flow.
– With a flat ramp, Carina starts slowly at an even
inspiration flow.
– With Auto setting on Ramp, the Carina deliv-
eres the flow automatically at 70 % of inspira-
tory time (average inspiratory time learned and
identified by the device).
