5.1.1: RS485 / Ethernet or WiFi (Com 1)
Com 1 provides RS485 standard and optional Ethernet or WiFi communication.
It supports Modbus RTU/ASCII/TCP. The RJ45 port and the WiFi antenna will be pres-
ent if this option was ordered. If you did not order the option, they will not be present.
The following sections explain the RS485 configuration in detail. Refer to Chapter 8
for the Ethernet/WiFi configuration. Note that there are Transmission (TX) and Receiv-
ing (RX) LED indicators under the RS485 port. These lights also work with the Ether-
net option, if it is being used.
NOTE:
Com 3 also provides RS485 communication - see 5.1.4: RS485/Display Port
5.1.2: RS485 Communication
RS485 allows you to connect one or multiple MP200 units to a PC or other device, at
either a local or remote site. All RS485 connections are viable for up to 4000 feet
(1219.20 meters).
Figure 5.2: MP200 Unit Connected to a PC via RS485 bus
As shown in Figure 5.2, to connect an MP200 unit to a PC using RS485 communica-
tion, you need to use an RS485 to RS232 converter, such as EIG’s Unicom 2500. See
5.1.2.1: Using the Unicom 2500, on page 5-5, for information on using the Unicom
2500 with the MP200 unit.
Figure 5.3 shows the detail of a 2-wire RS485 connection.
