Checking the lower unit for air
leakage
1. Remove the gear oil check screw 1 , and
then install the special service tool 2 .
See step 1 in “Checking the lower unit for
air leakage” (8-21).
2. Apply the specified pressure to check
that the pressure is maintained in the
lower unit for at least 10 seconds.
NOTICE: Do not over pressurize the
lower unit. Otherwise, the oil seals
could be damaged.
Installing the water pump
Do not reuse a gasket, always replace it
with a new one.

3. Install the impeller and water pump hous-
ing assembly, See steps 3–6 in “Install-
ing the water pump” (8-20).
Installing the lower unit
• Make sure to disconnect the battery
cables from the battery, and remove the
clip from the engine shut-off switch.
• When installing the lower unit with the
power unit installed, make sure to sus-
pend the outboard motor. If the out-
board motor is not suspended, it can fall
suddenly and result in severe injuries.
• Do not hold the propeller with your
hands when loosening or tightening the
propeller nut.
1. Move the remote control lever to the N
position.
2. Set the gear shift to the N position.
3. Install the dowels 1 , extension 2 , and
plates 3 , and then tighten the nuts 4 to
the specified torque. (X-transom model)
