7 Gearbox
This chapter describes troubleshooting, removal, and installation procedures for
the Gearbox assembly on a Segway PT. Each Segway PT has two Gearboxes.
WARNING!
• Failure to follow these safety precautions could lead to electrical shock,
serious injury, death, or damage to property.
• Read all instructions.
• Power off the Segway PT.
• Unplug the Segway PT.
• Wear safety glasses to avoid eye injury.
• Gearboxes are not field serviceable. Do not attempt to open the
gearbox for lubrication or repair. You must replace the entire gearbox
assembly if the gearbox is not operating normally. Servicing or
modifying the gearbox in any way could lead to malfunction.
CAUTION!
• When a repair involves opening the console or chassis cover, best
practice electrostatic discharge (ESD) control procedures must be
followed. Failure to follow ESD procedures could result in personal
injury or damage to property.
• Machined surfaces of the gearbox can be sharp. Use caution when
handling the gearbox and spacer to avoid injury.
When to Replace
It is appropriate to remove, inspect, or replace the gearbox for reasons that
include the following:
• Excessive wheel wobble that cannot be remedied by either changing
the wheel position on the gearbox, by rotating the mounting position
by 180 degrees, or by replacing the Tire/Wheel Assembly.
The wheel hub has three holes that correspond to the three gearbox
flange studs. The wheel can be mounted to the gearbox in any of three
positions, relative to these holes. Clocking the wheel (i.e. advancing
the wheel to the next of these three possible positions) might minimize
wheel wobble on some units.
• Excessive and progressively worsening noise and/or vibration that
cannot be remedied by removing potential obstructions of the wheel,
by properly inflating the tire, or by replacing the Tire/Wheel Assembly.
