Troubleshooting connectivity and misconfiguration
difficulties
This table lists some connectivity and misconfiguration problems and their
potential resolutions. It also includes DNS and mail configuration
troubleshooting guidelines. These problems are most likely to occur
immediately after initialization.
Tip: Set up a local console to troubleshoot Sidewinder appliance problems. For
information on using a serial terminal connection with the appliance, see
Knowledge Base article 3719 at
www.securecomputing.com/supportkb.cfm .

Error message:
Failed to connect
to SSL server
The appliance may not
have finished booting.
Try connecting again in a few minutes.
Your network
connectivity between
your management
station and your
appliance may have
failed.
Check your network connectivity and check your
Default Administration Route that you entered in the
Quick Start Wizard.
The appliance’s IP
address is wrong on the
appliance or in the Admin
Console.
Double-check the IP addresses you entered in the
Quick Start Wizard.
Error message:
Activation key has
expired
Appliance license is not
currently activated.
License appliance for it to begin passing and monitoring
traffic. See “Activating the license” on page 27 for
details.
DNS traffic is not passing
through appliance
DNS rule is not enabled. Use the Admin Console to enable the “dnsp to all
external resolvers” rule in the Rules window.
Need to switch from
transparent DNS to
hosted DNS
Change in security
policy.
Use the Reconfigure DNS tool in the Admin Console to
change your DNS configuration. See the “DNS” chapter
in the
Sidewinder Administration Guide
for details.
Mail not passing through
the appliance
Mail rules and servers
not configured as
expected.
Use the Reconfigure Mail tool in the Admin Console to
change your mail configuration. See the “E-mail”
chapter in the
Sidewinder Administration Guide
for
details.
