DSC DISTRESS RELAY CALLS
Normally, DSC distress calls are handled by
coast stations. In some cases, however, a coast
station may not receive a DSC call, a ship in
distress may not be equipped with DSC or the
ship in distress may be unable to make a call. If
this is the case, a distress relay call can be used
to report another vessel in distress.
To transmit a distress relay call on Channel 70,
press .
Press
to transmit to all ships or
to transmit an individual call (normally a nearby
coast station). If an individual call is desired,
select the station you are calling. When
prompted, press the
key to transmit the call.
It is also possible to initiate a distress relay while reviewing the distress call log.
This method is preferable if the call was received via DSC as the DSC ID and
position will be transferred automatically.
Care should be given when sending relay calls for another ship in distress.
If you are not positive that the coast station did not receive the original
distress call, use voice communications to relay the distress.
ALL SHIPS DSC CALLS
To call all ships within radio range use an all
ships call. Most frequently this is used by coast
stations to initiate navigational warnings, weather
reports and similar matters of interest to all
mariners.
To transmit an all ships DSC call, press
.
Select a priority category at the prompt.
Routine
indicates normal priority.
Safety
indicates important navigational or
meteorological warning.
Urgency
relates to safety of life or property.
Distress
is grave and imminent danger to life and property with immediate
assistance required.
The call will be sent on the default DSC channel programmed in the radio.
Routine calls will be transmitted at the 1W power level.
