5 BASIC OPERATION
The 5000 Series Tester requires the use of a PC computer running Windows
®
and
the STI 5000 Series Interface (PCW) program installed on the computer. This
program enables the user to create test programs, send the test program to the
tester, collect data in several different ways and examine the data or export it to
another program. To move to the top menu of the tester, push the “EXIT” key on the
5000 Series Tester front panel or press the “ESC” key on the PC. Complete details
for using the STI 5000 Series Interface can found in Section 6.
5.1 Power-up
The STI 5000 Series Interface software will auto run when the CD is first installed in
the CD drive. Included on the CD are some sample test programs and this manual in
Acrobat PDF format (if you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on the
computer, it may be installed from the file included on the CD). See Section 6 for
complete information on the STI 5000 Series Interface software.
5.2 Simple Startup Procedure
A procedure for an operator to test a device with a test program that has been
previously saved would be as follows:
Connect the computer to the 5000 Series Tester via the supplied RS-232
cable and supplied Null Modem adaptor. The 5000 Series Tester has a
connector on the back panel labeled “RS-232”.
Turn on the main power switch at rear panel of the tester. Allow the
system to warm up for 15 minutes. The test system has been calibrated
at the factory to perform optimally at operating temperature.
Plug in the Self-Test fixture; it has banana plugs on one side and a
clear cover on the front side. Plug the supplied interlock shorting bar
onto the jacks labeled “INTLK”.
Use the “Runtime” – “Self-Test” – “System Test” menu item on the PC
software to run System Self-
Test. Click the “Start” button on the “Self-
Test” window. The “Self-Test” window should display “CHECK-OUT
GOOD” in approximately 15 seconds assuming the system in
performing correctly.
Use the “Runtime” – “Send Test Program” menu item on the PC
software to send the desired test program to the 5000 Series Tester.
Connect any required external loads; plug the appropriate test fixture
into the 5000 Series tester front panel jacks and insert the device into
the fixture.
Press the “F2” key on the PC to execute the test sequence.
To collect data and perform other operations, refer to Section 6 for
complete instructions.
