701 Motor Protection Relay
Appendix D
SEL-2020/2030 & SEL-701PC
Compatibility Features
Introduction
This appendix describes communication features that the SEL-701 Relay serial
ports support when they are configured for ASCII communications. These functions
are not provided on the relay EIA-485 port when it is configured for Modbus
â
protocol
support.
SEL relays have two separate data streams that share the same EIA-232 serial
port. The relay supports communication with people using ASCII character commands
and formatted responses that are intelligible using a terminal or terminal emulation
package. In addition, the relay includes a class of compressed-ASCII commands
intended for use by the SEL-701PC software. These command responses include
ASCII characters but are formatted in a way that makes them more compact. They are
typically better suited to software analysis than analysis using a terminal emulation
package.
Interleaved with the ASCII data stream, the relay can receive and respond to a set
of binary commands. This mechanism allows a single communications channel to be
used for ASCII communications (e.g., transmission of a long event report) interleaved
with short bursts of binary data to support fast acquisition of metering data. The
requesting device must be equipped to execute the binary commands, then separate and
interpret the binary response. The binary commands and ASCII commands can also be
accessed by a device that does not interleave the data streams.

Application Guide AG95-10, Configuration and Fast Meter Messages
, is a
comprehensive description of the SEL binary messages.
