Febr uar y 2002, t he Feder al t r ade Com m ission ( FTC) char ged t w o

Radio frequency ener gy ( RF) from wireless phones can int eract wit h som e
elect r onic devices. For t his r eason, FDA helped develop a det ailed t est
m et hod t o m easur e elect r om agnet ic int er ference ( EMI ) of im plant ed
car diac pacem aker s and defibr illat or s fr om w ir eless t elephones. This t est
m et hod is now part of a st andard sponsored by t he Associat ion for t he
Advancem ent of Medical inst r um ent at ion ( AAMI ) . The final dr aft , a j oint
effor t by FDA, m edical device m anufact ur er s, and m any ot her gr oups,
w as com plet ed in lat e 2000. This st andar d w ill allow m anufact ur er s t o
ensure t hat cardiac pacem akers and defibrillat ors are safe from wireless
phone EMI . FDA has t est ed wir eless phones and helped dev elop a
volunt ar y st andar d sponsor ed by t he I nst it ut e of Elect r ical and Elect r onic
Engineer s ( I EEE) . This st andar d specifies t est m et hods and per for m ance
r equir em ent s for hear ing aids and wir eless phones so t hat no int er fer ence
occurs when a person uses a com pat ible phone and a com pat ible hearing
aid at t he sam e t im e. This st andard was approved by t he I EEE in 2000.
