Chapter IV Vector network analyzer mode
Section 1 Basic Operation
The section introduces the measurement function and measurement method of the S5105D/E/F
microwave analyzer in the vector network analyzer mode (hereinafter referred to as the “VNA”), so that
users can have a brief understanding on the test operation and conduct basic measurement.

Select mode
After startup, press
【

to pop up a Select mode dialog box, select the Vector Network Analyzer
mode, and press [OK] to complete the mode setting.

Select measurement parameter
The microwave analyzer in the VNA mode can measure the S parameters of the DUT and display them
in such formats as return loss, standing wave ratio, polar coordinates and group delay, and it can also
provide such functions as time domain measurement and gating.

→[S11], [S12], [S21] or [S22] to select different S parameter for measurement.

→[Format>] to select different measurement parameter via the menu softkey.
a) [Log], to select the measurement parameter and display it in the log format;
b) [Linear], to select the measurement parameter and display it in the linear format;
c) [VSWR], to select the measurement parameter and display it in the VSWR format;
d) [Phase], to select the measurement parameter and display it in the phase format;
e) [Smith], to select the measurement parameter and display it in the Smith circle diagram format;
f)
[Polar], to select the measurement parameter and display it in the polar format;
g) [Group Delay], to select the measurement parameter and display it in the group delay format;

→[Transform] to enter the time domain transform setting menu, and press relevant
menu key to set relevant parameters.

→[Gating] to enter the gating function, and press relevant menu key to set relevant
parameters.

→[Advance>] to select the measurement parameter from A1, B1, R1, A2, B2 and R2.

Set frequency range
Frequency range refers to the measurement frequency span. In the VNA mode, the S5105D/E/F
microwave analyzer must be set with proper measurement frequency range first before measurement
and calibration regardless any measurement parameter is selected. Frequency range can be set in the
following two methods:
Specify start/stop frequency
a) Press
【

→[Start Freq], enter the start frequency value via the figure key, and press the
frequency unit on the touchscreen to complete the start frequency setting;
b) Press [Stop Freq], enter the stop frequency value via the figure key, and press the frequency unit on
the touchscreen to complete the stop frequency setting.
Specify center frequency and span
a) Press

→[Center], enter the center frequency value via the figure key, and press the
frequency unit on the touchscreen to complete the center frequency setting;
b) Press [Span], enter the frequency span value via the figure key, and press the frequency unit on the
touchscreen to complete the span setting.

Calibration
After measurement setting, the microwave analyzer must be subject to calibration first before
measurement, so as to eliminate the system error, and ensure the validity and correctness of the
