Optical Smoke Detector

1.
Introduction
The AS-34 optical smoke detector is a standalone supervised smoke
detection and warning system for use in family homes or other
residential locations. The unit is easy to install and powered by a single
9V battery, which can sustain the unit’s operation for up to 1 year. The
smoke detector registers smoke particles by their photoelectric effect,
making it especially sensitive to smoky and smoldering fires that burn
slowly for many hours before bursting into flames. For example, this type
of fire might be caused by a cigarette burning against a sofa. The
detector can connect to Rosslare's security system panel, or to any
standard wireless security system. To connect the AS-34 smoke detector
to a wired or wireless system, mount it on Rosslare's SA-13G (wireless;
433.92MHz), SA-13H (wireless, 868.35MHz), or SA-13W (wired) base.
NOTE:
When the unit's battery is running low, the unit beeps, flashes its LED
indicator, and sends an alert message to its host control panel.
A fully mounted unit (AS-34 + SA-13G/H/W) is referred to as SA-
34G/H (wireless) or SA-34W (wired).
NOTE:
The AS-34 Smoke Detector is not designed to serve as a substitute
for a primary fire detection system.

Installation
The AS-34 is a photoelectric detector, it can be operated as a
standalone unit or as an alarm system together with the SA-13 wireless
or wired base. Mount the smoke detector on the ceiling in a central
area with plenty of air circulation, as described below.
3.1
Location
For full protection, every room should have a smoke detector fitted. In a
home with more than one storey, at least one smoke detector should
be fitted on each landing and at the bottom of the staircase. Ensure
the alert siren is audible from every room.
Do not fit the smoke detector:
♦
In areas where the temperature falls below 0°C or reaches above
40°
♦
In humid areas, such as bathrooms, kitchens, or shower rooms
C
♦
In a garage or other areas where exhaust gases may cause false
alarms
♦
Close to radiators or ventilation vents, which disrupt the airflow
♦
In a workshop or other dusty environment

Wiring the SA-34W
For wiring instillations follow the instructions below.
To set and wire the SA-34W:
1. set the alarm output setting to either Normally Open or Normally
Closed using the select switch on the SA-13W.
2. Connect the power between the Security Alarm system and the SA-
13W’s Vin and ground terminal blocks.
3. Connect the Tamper outputs to the Security Alarm system’s inputs
4. Connect the Alarm terminal blocks to the Security Alarm system,
refer to the installation manual of the alarm system you are
connecting the detector to.

Mounting the Detector
Before mounting the Detector, ensure that your chosen mounting area
is not in front of any electrical wiring or pipe work.
1. Mark two mounting points in the ceiling according to the base (SA-
13G/H/W) size and holes.
2. Drill into the marked points and insert wall plugs.
3. Using screws, mount the base onto the ceiling.
4. Mount the AS-34 unit on the base (see Figure 3).
NOTE:
Be careful not to over-tighten the screws.
